About this Car Running Cost Tracker template
The fuel economy on the dashboard is rarely what you actually get. This Excel car running cost tracker logs each fill-up with the odometer reading, litres and price per litre, and works out real MPG from the miles driven between fill-ups.
Add your yearly insurance, tax, servicing, MOT, tyres and depreciation, and it shows the fuel cost per mile, the total cost of a year's driving, the true cost per mile and the cost per month.

How to use it
Fill up to full every time and record the odometer. MPG is worked out from the distance between fill-ups, which is the only way to get a real figure.
The file opens with sample rows so you can see every formula working before you change anything. Type your own figures over them. When you need more rows, insert them inside the existing block rather than underneath it, so the totals keep covering every row.
Shaded, boxed cells below the table are settings the formulas read from. Change those first — every row that depends on them updates at once.

How is MPG calculated?
Miles driven since the last fill-up divided by the fuel used, converting litres to UK gallons at 4.54609 litres per gallon.
Why fill the tank to full each time?
MPG is measured from the fuel needed to refill after each stretch of driving. Filling to full every time keeps each reading accurate.
What is the true cost per mile?
Fuel plus every other yearly cost, divided by the miles you expect to drive in a year.
