How to Freeze Rows and Columns in Excel (and Unfreeze Them)

Freeze panes keep your header row or key columns visible while you scroll through large datasets. Here is exactly how to freeze rows, columns, or both — and how to fix it when it is not working.

How to Freeze the Top Row

This is the most common use case — keeping your header row visible as you scroll down.

  1. Click anywhere on the sheet (no need to select a specific cell)
  2. Go to the View tab on the ribbon
  3. Click Freeze PanesFreeze Top Row

A thin grey line appears below row 1. As you scroll down, row 1 stays fixed at the top.

How to Freeze the First Column

  1. Go to View → Freeze Panes → Freeze First Column

A thin grey line appears to the right of column A. As you scroll right, column A stays fixed.

How to Freeze Multiple Rows

To freeze the first two rows (or any number of rows):

  1. Click on the first cell of the row immediately below where you want the freeze. If you want to freeze rows 1 and 2, click on cell A3
  2. Go to View → Freeze Panes → Freeze Panes (the first option, not "Freeze Top Row")

Everything above your selected cell (rows 1 and 2) is now frozen.

How to Freeze Both Rows and Columns at Once

To freeze the top 2 rows AND the first 2 columns simultaneously:

  1. Click on cell C3 — the cell one row below your last frozen row, and one column to the right of your last frozen column
  2. Go to View → Freeze Panes → Freeze Panes

The rule is: click the cell at the intersection of where you want the freeze, then select Freeze Panes. Everything above and to the left of that cell becomes frozen.

How to Unfreeze Panes

  1. Go to View → Freeze Panes
  2. The first option now reads Unfreeze Panes (it changes when panes are active)
  3. Click it

All freeze panes are removed immediately.

Common Problems and Fixes

Problem: "Freeze Panes" is greyed out

This happens when the sheet is in Page Layout view or when cells are in edit mode. Fix: press Escape to exit any edit mode, then switch to Normal view (View → Normal) before applying freeze panes.

Problem: Freeze line is in the wrong place

Unfreeze first (View → Freeze Panes → Unfreeze Panes), then re-apply by clicking the correct cell before freezing. Remember: click the cell below and to the right of what you want frozen.

Problem: Row 1 is not at the top when I freeze (my data starts scrolled down)

Freeze panes freeze from the current scroll position. Scroll back to the top of the sheet (Ctrl+Home) first, then apply Freeze Top Row. Otherwise, whatever row is currently at the top of the visible area becomes the freeze row.

Problem: Freeze panes are not printing at the top of each page

Freeze panes only affect the screen view — they do not control printing. To repeat a header row on every printed page: go to Page Layout → Print Titles → Rows to repeat at top → click the row selector for your header row → OK.

Freeze Panes vs Split Panes

Excel also has a "Split" feature (View → Split) which divides the worksheet into separate scrollable panes. Unlike Freeze Panes, Split creates independent scrollable regions — useful for comparing data in different parts of the same sheet. Freeze Panes is better for keeping headers visible; Split is better for comparing distant rows or columns.

Keyboard Shortcut

There is no default keyboard shortcut for Freeze Panes, but you can access it quickly via the Alt key sequence: AltWFF to toggle Freeze Panes on or off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I freeze rows in the middle of a sheet (not at the top)?

No — freeze panes always lock rows and columns starting from the top-left. You cannot freeze a middle row while keeping the rows above it scrollable. If you need to compare two parts of a sheet, use Split instead.

Does freezing affect sorting or filtering?

No — freeze panes are purely a visual feature. Sorting, filtering, and formulas all work normally regardless of whether panes are frozen.

Do freeze panes save with the file?

Yes — freeze pane settings are saved as part of the workbook. When someone else opens the file, the panes will be frozen in the same position you set them.
